Frequently Asked Questions About Hardwood Flooring
How do I prepare for hardwood floor
You will need to move furniture out
of the work area. If you need a hand,
let us know. We have vacuum systems
and dust containment but it doesn't get rid
of 100% of the dust. So, we will hang
plastic over doorways to keep any dust
limited to the work area. We will need access to 220
power when we sand.
the process for installing new hardwood
We cut and nail the wood floor planks, fill
gaps and sand the floor. Then, we will
show you color samples on the floor itself,
so you can pick stain colors based on your
lighting and wall colors. We apply the
stain, then follow up with 2 coats of
finish, allowing drying time between coats.
Oil base finish take 6-8 hours to dry,
water-base finish takes 1-2 hours to dry.
Both finishes are commercial grade and
available in satin, semi-gloss and gloss.
the difference between a water base finish
and an oil base finish?
Drying time is shorter with water base
finishes. It doesn't look as shiny as
the oil, so if you want a less glossy or
matte look, water base may suit your taste.
Customers who want a high glass look to
their hardwood floors will want to choose an
oil base finish. Durability is the
same. Oil base finish will darken the
wood to a warm, amber color, while water
base finish will go on clear. Also, water base
finish has less odor.
How do I
clean and maintain my hardwood floor?
You can simply wash your hardwood floor with a
mixture of vinegar and water. 1/2 cup
of vinegar to 1 gallon of water is all it
takes. Vacuum often or use a dry swiffer to get rid of grit that can wear the
finish. Never use a wax
product on your floors - if you do, we won't
be able to do a simple recoat when the time
comes, a maintenance finish coat will
not adhere. If you have a question
about cleaning products for your hardwood
floor, feel free to call us!
often will I need to sand or recoat my
A high traffic wood floor (like a
hallway or kitchen) will need to be recoated
in 3-5 years. We lightly screen the
floor and put down one coat of finish.
If you do this regularly, you may never have
to sand and refinish your wood floor.
solid hardwood floor more expensive to install
than other kinds of flooring?
A hardwood floor is a 'forever floor' -
it will give you lasting durability and
beauty. When you consider the expense
to replace carpet or laminate over the
years, a solid hardwood floor offers good
value for your money.
